Varieties:No cultivated strains — this is a wild-type fish, and most stock is wild-caught from Sumatra, Borneo and the Malay Peninsula. Colour varies between collection points and, far more, with the water the fish is kept in. The genus is worth understanding because it has been split repeatedly. Several fish sold as rasboras now sit elsewhere: the harlequin, lambchop and glowlight rasboras are Trigonostigma; the chili and dwarf rasboras are Boraras; the various scissortail relatives remain in Rasbora proper. Within Rasbora, R. trilineata, the scissortail, is comparably large; R. borapetensis, the blackline rasbora, and R. einthovenii are smaller and hardier. For a blackwater tank with the space, the clown rasbora is among the most striking of them. For a general community, the harlequin or the lambchop is the sensible choice — smaller, hardier and far less demanding about water.

Clown Rasbora (Rasbora kalochroma) is a species of fish in the family Cyprinidae. It is native to Southeast Asia (blackwater streams of Sumatra, Borneo, Malay Peninsula). The clown rasbora is a blackwater fish and it looks it. In tannin-stained water over a dark substrate, a mature specimen runs a deep coppery orange-red with two dark blotches on the flank; in a bright, hard-water community tank it fades to a washed-out pink and looks like a different animal. It reaches 100 mm standard length, which makes it one of the larger rasboras, and the specialist minimum tank is a 120 × 45 × 45 cm base at around 243 litres. It is peaceful and social, and at least eight to ten specimens should be purchased. It is more demanding than the common rasboras: susceptible to water chemistry swings, needing mature, established tanks, and best in soft acidic water with leaf litter and driftwood.
