Varieties:A long-finned form is produced commercially, and various selections are traded as "gold pearl" or similar, but there are no established named strains. The complications are taxonomic rather than ornamental. The species has been moved from Danio to Brachydanio, so both names appear on labels and in books. Taxonomic uncertainty remains, and this may represent multiple species rather than one — which explains the variation in colour and body shape between imports. Hybrids with Brachydanio roseus, the rosy danio, are reportedly common in the aquarium trade, and a fish showing an unusual amount of pink may be one. Among relatives, the zebra danio and leopard danio are the familiar aquarium species and share the cool-water tolerance; the celestial pearl danio, despite the name, is a much smaller and more delicate fish requiring quite different care. For a subtropical community, the pearl and zebra danios sit alongside white clouds and gold barbs as the standard choices.

Pearl Danio (Danio albolineatus) is a species of fish in the family Cyprinidae. It is native to Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Thailand and neighbouring regions). The pearl danio is the zebra danio's understated relative: no stripes, but an iridescent pearl-violet sheen along the flanks that flushes pink and gold toward the tail in a mature male under good light. It reaches 55 mm standard length, and its range is 16 to 25 °C (61–77 °F) — genuinely subtropical, and one of the fish that makes an unheated tank possible. It is described as extremely peaceful and it should really be kept in a group of at least eight to ten specimens, which is where the male display that produces the colour actually happens. Two things complicate its identity. The genus has moved — it is now placed in Brachydanio — and hybrids with the rosy danio are reportedly common in the aquarium trade, which is part of why colour varies so much between shops.
