Quick Tips
- Substrate:Nutrient-Rich Substrate + Root Tabs
- Max Nitrate:40 mg/L
- Native Status:Non-Native
Amazon Sword (Echinodorus grisebachii) is an aquatic plant in the family Alismataceae. It is native to South America. The Amazon sword is the classic background rosette, and the single most useful thing to know about it is where it feeds. It is a heavy root feeder. Fertiliser added to the water column does comparatively little; nutrient substrate or root tabs under the crown are what produce the large, broad, deep green leaves the plant is bought for. A sword in inert gravel with liquid dosing stays small and pale, and its keeper usually blames the light. It is a South American species reaching around 50 cm, growing in medium light without CO2 at 22 to 28 °C (72–82 °F). Its name has moved: Echinodorus amazonicus and E. bleheri are both synonyms of E. grisebachii, so shop labels vary while the plant does not.
