Varieties:The golden wonder is itself the variety, which is the first thing to understand about this fish. The wild striped panchax is an olive-brown fish with rows of iridescent scales and vertical bars on the rear half — handsome rather than showy. The golden wonder is an aquarium variant with a more yellowish colouration, selected in captivity, and it is by far the more commonly traded of the two. Wild-type striped panchax are available from specialists and are a more subtle fish. Other colour selections appear occasionally, including strains with heavier red spotting. Several relatives are traded alongside it. Aplocheilus panchax, the blue panchax, is smaller and widely available. A. dayi and A. blockii are also imported. All are non-annual surface killifish with similar habits. Do not confuse the group with the annual killifish that give the family its reputation — Nothobranchius, Austrolebias and Fundulopanchax species live in seasonal pools, have short lives, and lay eggs that require a dry diapause. They are a different proposition entirely, and this fish is not one of them.

Golden Wonder Killifish (Aplocheilus lineatus) is a species of fish in the family Aplocheilidae. It is native to South Asia (southern India and Sri Lanka). The golden wonder is the killifish for people who have been put off killifish. Most of the family's reputation comes from the annual species — fish that live a season in a drying pool, whose eggs must be stored in damp peat and hatched deliberately. This is not one of those. Aplocheilus lineatus, the striped panchax, is a non-annual fish from permanent streams, rivers, swamps and paddy fields across southern India and Sri Lanka, and it lives around six years. The golden wonder is an aquarium variant of that species with a more yellowish colouration — a captive strain rather than a wild fish. It reaches 10 cm, though males typically sit around 7 cm and only reach the maximum in excellent conditions. It hangs just under the surface, watching, and it eats insects, crustaceans and small fishes. It also jumps very well, which is the single most important thing to know.
