Dwarf Hairgrass (Eleocharis parvula) is an aquatic plant in the family Cyperaceae. It is native to Cosmopolitan. Eleocharis parvula is the carpeting hairgrass, topping out around 10 cm, and it spreads by runners into a dense grassy lawn. The speed of that spread is entirely a function of light and CO2. Under strong light with CO2 it carpets in a couple of months; in a low-tech tank it survives, spreads slowly and often stays sparse — which is the commonest disappointment with it. It is cosmopolitan, growing at 20 to 26 °C (68–79 °F) in soft to moderately hard water. The technique matters: separate the pot into small plugs of a few blades each and plant them a couple of centimetres apart, rather than pushing the whole mass in as one clump. Trimming encourages it to thicken.
