Varieties:No cultivated strains, and a genuine identification problem instead. Corydoras adolfoi closely resembles Corydoras duplicareus, and the two are routinely mixed in shipments and sold under either name. The reliable distinction is serrations on the pectoral fin spine, which are nearly invisible to the naked eye; in practice duplicareus tends to show a broader, more solid black dorsal stripe. Corydoras imitator and Corydoras serratus are further members of the same look-alike group. All of them are upper Rio Negro blackwater fish with similar requirements, so a mixed group is not a husbandry problem — but they will hybridise, and mixing them is discouraged. Elsewhere in the genus, the bronze, peppered and panda cories are the hardy, adaptable species for a general community; this one is for a soft-water tank kept deliberately. The 2024 revision of the group split Corydoras into seven genera and placed this species in Hoplisoma, so a shop label still reading Corydoras adolfoi means the same fish.

Adolfo's Corydoras (Hoplisoma adolfoi) is a species of fish in the family Callichthyidae. It is native to South America (upper Rio Negro, Brazil). Adolfo's cory is one of the handsomest of the small Corydoras and one of the more demanding, and both facts come from the same place: it is a highly endemic fish from the upper Rio Negro, where the water is extraordinarily soft and acidic. The markings are precise — a black mask through the eye, an orange-red patch on the nape, and a black stripe running along the back over a white body. It reaches 60 mm standard length and needs a group of at least four to six, though more is better. The water is the point. This species comes from blackwater at pH as low as 4.0 and hardness of 1 to 5 dGH, and while it tolerates harder supplies, it does not thrive in them. It is also easily confused with Corydoras duplicareus.
