| Varieties: | No cultivated strains, and a species-identification problem instead. Corydoras julii and C. trilineatus are traded interchangeably, and most fish sold as julii are trilineatus. The head markings are the traditional test — numerous small distinct spots on the head in julii, vermiform worm-like markings in trilineatus — but the distinction is unreliable, since some trilineatus show a spotted pattern. Without collection details, the two can be genuinely difficult to identify. For a keeper the requirements are identical and they coexist happily, so a mixed group is not a husbandry problem. It does mean a "julii" shoal is often two species. Albino and long-finned forms of various spotted corydoras circulate and are not well distinguished by species. Several other finely spotted corydoras look similar in a shop tank, including C. leopardus and the various C-numbered forms. If you want a documented species, buy from a specialist who records collection data — which is a small trade rather than a shop counter. |

Julii Corydoras (Hoplisoma julii) is a species of fish in the family Callichthyidae. It is native to South America (lower Amazon tributaries, eastern Brazil). The julii cory is probably not a julii cory. Many aquarium fish labelled Corydoras julii are actually the similar C. trilineatus, and the distinction is genuinely awkward. The traditional test is head markings — C. julii carries numerous small, distinct spots on the head, C. trilineatus a series of vermiform, worm-like markings — but some C. trilineatus individuals show a spotted pattern too, so the species can be hard to separate without collection data. We list it under the trade name because that is what people search for. Whichever you have, it is a small, handsome, finely marked corydoras reaching 55 mm standard length, and it is kept exactly as any other cory: sand, a group, clean water and food that reaches the bottom. Its temperature range is cooler than most people assume, at 20–26 °C (68–79 °F).
