Varieties:No cultivated strains — this is a wild-caught fish with an enormous Indo-Pacific range, from the East African coast to Hawaii and the Tuamotus. The taxonomy has been unsettled. Hawaiian fish have been treated as Centropyge fisheri and Indian Ocean and central Pacific populations as C. flavicauda, the whitetail angelfish, with the two variously merged and separated — so a fish sold under either name may be the same animal, and the trade uses both. It was described from Diamond Head, Oahu, in 1904 and named after Walter Kenrick Fisher of Stanford University. Among the other dwarf angels, C. argi, the cherub angel, is the closest in size and temperament and is a Caribbean species; the coral beauty and flame angel are considerably larger.

Fisher's Angelfish (Centropyge fisheri) is a species of fish in the family Pomacanthidae. It is native to Pacific reefs. Fisher's angelfish is the smallest dwarf angel in general trade, reaching 8.4 cm, and one of the most modest — orange-brown with a dark spot and blue highlights in the fins. That understatement is its appeal. It is peaceful for a Centropyge, well suited to smaller reef tanks, and less inclined to bully than the bigger members of the genus. It has a wide Indo-Pacific range, from Somalia, Kenya and Tanzania across to Hawaii, Johnston Atoll and the Tuamotus, at 3 to 60 metres among coral, channels, reef slopes and rubble. It lives in small groups alongside damselfish and wrasses, and is a protogynous hermaphrodite — the dominant female changes sex if there is no male.
