Varieties:Extensively selectively bred, and the designer strains are a substantial part of the trade. Established forms include the Snowflake and Wyoming White with expanded white areas, the Black Ice and Midnight with dark bodies, the Picasso with irregular bars, the Naked with no bars at all, and the Longfin variants. The wild-type fish is orange with three white bars edged in black, and it remains the hardiest. High demand for specific colour varieties has been the main driver of captive breeding, which has in turn taken pressure off wild populations. The species is frequently confused with Amphiprion percula, the true percula clownfish, which has thicker black edging to the bars and fewer dorsal spines. Both are traded as "clownfish", and for a keeper the two are effectively interchangeable.

Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) is a species of fish in the family Pomacentridae. It is native to Indo-Pacific (reefs of Southeast Asia, northern Australia). The ocellaris clownfish is the best first marine fish there is: hardy, captive-bred in enormous numbers, and interesting enough to hold attention for years. It reaches around 11 cm, with females noticeably larger than males, and comes from the eastern Indian Ocean and western Pacific, on outer reef slopes and sheltered lagoons down to about 15 metres. Two things make it more than a pretty orange fish. It is a protandrous hermaphrodite — every clownfish begins life as a male, and the largest individual in a group becomes female. And it forms a symbiosis with sea anemones which, contrary to widespread belief, it does not need in captivity.
